Our town came into existence when the glistening rails of Canada Southern Railway were laid across the muddy Talbot Trail in 1873. Essex quickly became the hub for shipping and transportation in Essex County. Essex still sees rail traffic by CN and Norfolk Southern daily. Many of these freights service the Ford plant in St. Thomas. The station today welcomes visitors from all over North America.

Much of our history can be found in the giant murals that depict our unique past. From the Windsor to Leamington electric railway, to our first mural depicting the three cornerstones of Essex, the railway, the automobile and agriculture, Essex outdoor murals have brought bus

trips with sightseers from as far away as Germany. This town project continues to grow in popularity. (More on Murals)
